Ordinal Numbers

Introduction

This document is meant to be used for demonstrating how JAWS speaks Ordinal Numerals in different languages.

Definitions

• Ordinal Numeral

  • In linguistics, ordinal numerals or ordinal number words are words representing position or rank in a sequential order; the order may be of size, importance, chronology, and so on (e.g., “third”, “tertiary”). They differ from cardinal numerals, which represent quantity (e.g., “three”) and other types of numerals.

• Ordinal Indicator

  • In written languages, an ordinal indicator is a character, or group of characters, following a numeral denoting that it is an ordinal number, rather than a cardinal number.
  • Different symbols are used as the ordinal indicator.
  • In several languages the ordinal indicator comes before the number instead of coming after the number.
  • JAWS currently detects the ordinal indicator whether it comes after the number or before the number.

• Ordinal Dot

  • In Basque, Serbo-Croatian, Czech, Danish, Estonian, Faroese, Finnish, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Latvian, Norwegian, Slovak, Slovene, Turkish, among other languages, a period or full stop is written after the numeral as the ordinal indicator.
  • JAWS detects the Ordinal Dot.
  • Some languages such as Italian and Spanish may use the ordinal dot followed by the ordinal indicator symbol.

• Ordinal Indicator Symbols

  • The Unicode character U+00AA (ª) is the Feminine Ordinal Indicator.
  • The Unicode character U+00BA (º) is the Masculine Ordinal Indicator.
